Family planning
EPMA has measured family planning in Ethiopia since 2014, including contraceptive prevalence, method mix and unmet need; the quality of counseling and reasons for discontinuation; postpartum contraceptive uptake through the year after birth (panel study); and the availability of methods at facilities (SDP survey). From 2026, a male survey adds men’s views on and engagement in family planning. When EPMA showed a sharp fall in counseling quality since 2015, the Ministry made counseling a flagship priority for regional health bureaus and issued a counseling pocket guide for frontline workers, which helped to improve the situation.
